In Dust: An Elysian Tail there are 4 difficulties that have different traits that make the gameplay more complex.

Easy

  • Enemies flank very litte.
  • Damage reduced about 50%.
  • Save points heal if health under 100%.
  • Invincibility after hit kept 1 second longer.
  • No death penalty.
  • 3 buttons to press on treasure chests.
  • 5 buttons to press on locked cages.
  • Fruit bombs do 1,500 damage.
  • Health restoring items are used automatically on pickup if health below 100%.
  • Items which provide additional effects (such as enhanced attack or defense), or heal a status condition (burning, poisoning), will be consumed on pickup. Just one item will be consumed until the effect wears off.
  • Enviromental damage reduced by 50%.
  • Environemental hazard acitivation is 2 seconds.
  • Energy bar replenishes at a fast rate.
  • Blueprint drop rate is high.
  • Items drop rate is high.
  • Burning up all of the Dust Storm's energy does not inflict damage.
  • Earned skill points at level up are spent automatically.

Normal

  • Enemies flank a couple times.
  • Damage is not reduced.
  • Save points heal if health under 50%.
  • Invincibility after hit is kept regular time.
  • Death penalty.
  • 4 buttons to press on treasure chests.
  • 6 buttons to press on locked cages.
  • Fruit bombs do 1,000 damage.
  • Health restoring items are not used automatically on pickup if health below 100%.
  • Environmental damage is kept the same.
  • Environmental hazard activation is 1½ seconds.
  • Energy bar replenishes at a normal rate.
  • Blueprint drop rate is moderate.
  • Items drop rate is moderate.
  • Earned skill points at level up can be spent at will.

Tough

  • Enemies flank until they see an opening.
  • Damage is increased by 25%.
  • Save points heal if health under 25%.
  • Invincibility after hit is reduced by 1 second.
  • Death penalty.
  • 5 buttons to press on treasure chests.
  • 7 buttons to press on locked cages.
  • Fruit bombs do 800 damage.
  • Health restoring items are not used automatically on pickup if health below 100%.
  • Environmental damage is increased by 35%.
  • Environmental hazard activation is 1 second.
  • Energy bar replenishes at a slow rate.
  • Blueprint drop rate is small.
  • Items drop rate is sub-moderate.
  • Earned skill points at level up can be spent at will.

Hardcore

  • Enemies flank commonly.
  • Damage is increased by 50%.
  • Save points heal if health under 10%.
  • Invincibility after hit lasts ½ second.
  • Death penalty.
  • 6 buttons to press on treasure chests.
  • 8 buttons to press on locked cages.
  • Fruit bombs do 600 damage.
  • Health restoring items are not used automatically on pickup if health below 100%.
  • Environmental damage is increased by 50%.
  • Environmental hazards are inescapable after landing on until death occurs (escapable on Steam version) or if knocked to a safe spot.
  • Environmental hazard activation is instantaneous.
  • Energy bar replenishes at an extremely slow rate.
  • Blueprint drop rate is rare.
  • Items drop rate is low.
  • Burning up all of the Dust Storm's energy results in ¼ damage or more of current max health.
  • Earned skill points at level up can be spent at will.
